SMAA is encouraging the community to share and enjoy our municipal airport. SMAA has organized it’s members and the aviation community to showcase each month the smaller aircraft that typically use SMO, their various missions and capabilities.

General Aviation” or GA includes all aircraft except the US military and the scheduled and unscheduled commercial air carriers. GA represents the largest number of aircraft in the USA, and arguably, the greatest range of capabilities.

Examples of GA, with typical aircraft used, include:

Flight training - Cessna 172, Piper Warrior, Cirrus SR22, Robinson R22

Business travel - Beech King Air, Bonanza, Cessna Caravan

Law Enforcement - Bell Jet Ranger, Robinson R44,

News Gathering - Robinson R22, Cessna 172

Search and rescue - Robinson R44, Cessna 182, Cessna Caravan

Air taxi - Piper Seneca, Cirrus SR22

All the above GA aircraft and more operate from 100 year-old SMO on a regular basis. GA in the US is comprised of more than 200,000 various aircraft operating from around 5,200 public use airports nationwide. There are 600,000+ FAA licensed pilots in the US from sport and recreational, private and commercial pilots to around 100,000 air transport pilots, who fly for the scheduled airlines. For comparison, there are around 560 airports in the US that host scheduled airline service, e.g. LAX. US airlines operate a total fleet of more than 4,200 jet airliners.
